I’m going to bet that you’ve been on a crystal and rock journey much longer than you’re aware of. If you wear any sort of jewelry – a diamond ring, some emerald earrings, or even a gold plated necklace, congratulations! You use crystal energy.
Gold is the most obvious form of rock and mineral that you may have been wearing and it’s also highly common. Gold is highly magical and full of good positive vibes. It’s the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. It’s the color of your energy that you give yourself in clairvoyant meditations. It’s a high vibration color. It’s a bright warm sun during golden hour on a magical summer’s eve. All of this is to say, some of this stuff can be obvious and for good reason! Our lives are magical and many of the things we do day to day have that magic built in, but you may not realize it until you start to dig in.
Most crystals have associated properties with them – for example malachite is very calming and soothing, moldavite is known to removing negative things from your life, and rose quartz it full of love energy. But how to you start to understand what those properties are? I usually start with google. There are many excellent websites that cover a WIDE variety of crystals. There’s one book in particular that I recommend as an excellent reference book: The Book of Stones: Who They Are and What They Teach by Robert Simmons and Naisha Ahsian. I like this book in particular because they go through the physical and metaphysical properties. They list associated chakras and in many cases they mention what other crystals they synchronize well with. Robert Simmons and his wife also own a jewelry/crystal shop where they sell many of these crystals called heavenandearthjewelry.com.
So how do I approach new crystals? I start with the basics. What color is it? What’s the shape? How dense is it? Is it lighter or heavier than I expected? It’s there anything I notice about the structure or coloring? Can I see through it? If I pick it up, does it make me feel a specific way? Did I have a new thought pop into my head that shouldn’t be there? All of these things contribute to how and what I use the crystals for.
You can of course do this in a crystal shop if you’re a seasoned meditator, although I usually wait until I’m home and in my own space – I like to meditate or sleep with my new crystals to start to understand how they interact with my energy. Some crystals bring of feelings that I need to work through and some will bring me peace and calm.
There are a two rules of thumb that can help guide how a crystal with interact with most people. The first rule is that the color of the stone will likely drive energy to the chakra of the associated color. If you’re not familiar with chakra’s this is generally how they are laid out.

Black/dark colors such as obsidian and smoky quartz usually go with the root chakra (at the base of your spine). White is often placed with your crown chakra at the top of your head, such as when using howlite. Learning the chakra system can also be highly beneficial to help understand how crystals might interact with you. For example, if you can’t stop daydreaming, grabbing a crystal that goes with your root chakra can help you stay grounded and focused on the task at hand.
The second rule of thumb is the crystal’s structure. Selenite is an excellent example of this – its striated, so it looks like it’s made out of lots of long strings that have been glued together. Because of it’s shape, it’s a great cleansing crystal – it helps get things back in line and also acts as a catch for anything that doesn’t belong.
Using the rules of thumb and then looking up crystals as I come across them has really helped me learn what each of them are for and to come to understand how to select what I want in any given situation. I highly recommend going the slow road with crystals – it’s very easy to buy a whole bunch because it’s new and exciting (and can be a fairly economical hobby, many crystals can be purchased for $1-$5), but it can become overwhelming to learn about each one so quickly. That may just be me though, so feel free to ignore that advice if you have better self disciple then I do.
Below is a list of some of my favorite crystals that are great to start with – they are easy to find and there’s a ton of great information on the web about them.
Selenite Wands | Tiger’s Eye Bracelets | Amethyst | Labradorite | Rose Quartz | Lapis Lazuli | Malachite | Clear Quartz | Howlite | Obsidian | Jet | Pyrite | Carnelian
Once you have a bunch of crystals, what do you do with them? I use them a few ways but there are so many more things to do with them beyond this.
Sleeping with them: I usually pick a bracelet or necklace to sleep with at night to set the tone for the type of dream I want to have. Am I looking for some loving feelings? I’ll put on my Rose Quartz Bracelet. Although bracelets are my favorite, I have found that putting a selenite wand under my pillow can really enhance things. Or I will hold them in my hand or put them in a pocket.
Meditating: If I’m trying to achieve something specific, or just getting to know my crystal, meditating with it can be excellent. If you have a specific goal with meditation, you can also do grids with crystals to help achieve that goal. Trying to realign your chakras is quite common and placing a stone on each chakra (while lying down) that’s associated with that chakra can bring things back into alignment.
Reiki: If you’ve followed along with my YouTube channel, you’ve likely seen my distance reiki healing videos. Reiki is a form of energy healing and I use crystals to enhance the energy that I’m sending based on the feedback I’m getting. If someone is having trouble speaking their truth, I grab a blue sodalite stone to help move energy in the throat chakra.
Enhance performance: Have a big presentation at work your nervous about? Grab some Obsidian to help you stay grounded. Have a coworker bothering you? Grab some Tiger’s Eye Bracelets for protection and maybe some Malachite to help keep you calm. The crystals won’t solve all of your problems, but they certainly help.
Charge Water: You can also use the crystals to charge water and drink the water to get the benefits from the crystals BUT be very careful doing this. Some crystals (malachite!) are toxic and will dissolve in water. Placing the crystals on top of a jar of water (on the lid) also works well and eliminates the risk of potential damage to yourself or your rocks.
How do you make sure they are still working properly? You can charge them or cleanse them, just like you do yourself! Place them in moonlight or in sunlight (although make sure it won’t damage the crystal). Or you can run a piece of selenite over your other crystals. Of you can place them in some salt.
