Twin Flames, Soulmates, and Soul Family

Twin flames are incredibly rare, whereas soulmates and soul family are something everyone has. Twin flames are believed to be two halves of the same soul incarnated at the same time. Soul families, on the other hand, usually consist of 10 to 15 souls that frequently incarnate together and were generally brought into existence around the same time. Soulmates are often the person you choose as your life partner most frequently.

That said, every time I’ve posted about twin flames, I receive dozens of messages from people claiming to have met theirs. While it’s certainly possible, I remain skeptical. This could be my own limiting belief, so take it as you will. However, I do want to offer a word of caution when it comes to the twin flame concept.

The idea of twin flames often leads people to believe they must spend their lives searching for one particular soul. Then, if and when they do find them, rejection tends to be part of the dynamic—on one side or the other. I’ve seen people get stuck in this idea, losing sight of the life unfolding right in front of them. When rejection happens, some struggle to move on, which results in stagnant energy. And when energy gets stuck, it can manifest as illness or pain.

Spirituality is, at its core, about energy work—moving energy. Move it on. Move it out. Move it up. Being fixated on one person can be incredibly unhealthy. No one should stay with an abuser or someone who treats them poorly just because they believe “it’s my twin flame.” No. You deserve better. Spiritual concepts should never override logic, safety, or well-being. We only have this human life for a short time in the grand scheme of the universe. Our souls are eternal. Your twin flame—if you have one—can wait.

What I do know is that everyone has a soul family and often a “soulmate,” or at least one soul they tend to prefer as a partner. But that doesn’t mean you are destined to be with them in every life. In fact, you may not even meet them in this lifetime. However, you will always cross paths with some of your soul family—usually at least one or two members. Roles change from life to life; you might be a parent to one of your soul family members in this life, only to be their child in the next. It’s all part of the soul’s evolution.

So, my personal recommendation is to shift your mindset away from searching for a twin flame—or even assuming you have one. Instead, focus on what’s right in front of you. Some romantic connections will be more aligned with you than others, but none will be absolutely perfect—and that’s okay. Determine your non-negotiables in a partner and establish clear boundaries. Don’t compromise on either.

If you’d like further reading on the topics, I recommend reading Journey of Souls by Michael Newton. Many have also suggested the book The Twin Flame Journey by Martina and Hans Thorn Durefelt, although I have not read it personally.
