So you’re wondering if wearing secondhand clothing is going to bring attachments or bad energy. The short answer is no, it’s very unlikely.
Of course, nothing is ever completely black and white, it’s certainly possible to have energy embedded in objects. That’s why we hear about things like the Annabelle doll or people wondering if Labubu dolls are demonic. I think of the energy of anything as a layer cake. At the very core of material objects is a vibration. It can be the materials or way it’s made. Some fibers make you feel better than others for example. This can be one reason why people tend towards natural fibers such as cotton, linen, and silk. This is a very subtle energy though – polyester doesn’t necessarily make you feel bad or lower your vibration just because it’s not a natural fabric. It’s just different. If you’d like more on this, I have a blog post with more detail here.
The second layer of energy to an object is what has happened externally to or around it. Both new and used things have this – it’s the manufacturing, shipping, and handling of the piece. Thrifted or secondhand objects just have a bit extra of this energy and that might also include wearing or use. Unless you’ve got hypersensitivity happening, you’re probably not going to notice the energy from the object creation. We’ve all become a bit numb to this because most of our things are manufactured the same way. You might notice a difference if you’ve had somebody make a scarf or hat for you; it feels different. Part of that is the love and care someone put into making it for you and part of that is the lack of machinery and mass production.
So when might the energy of buying second hand be problematic? It really only matters with extreme energies and feelings. If someone got murdered in an outfit, that would carry a lot of heavy energy, but also, that won’t be donated to the thrift store. It’s probably in an evidence locker, so you really don’t need to worry about buying clothes from a murder victim. A major breakup could potentially carry some of that energy, but spirit is telling me that energy really only sticks to clothing if they broke up over the clothes. 99.9% of what happens day to day is mundane and is not going to impact the energy of objects and clothing. Dishes donated from a divorce aren’t going to carry divorce energy into your home.
How can you tell if buying something second hand is going to be an issue? Notice your body when you pick it up or get close to it. Do your shoulders tense up? Does your breathing get faster? Do you feel uneasy? You know (even if subconsciously) if this is something that will be a problem for you. You can do this with things you already own too – it can help clear your space of energy too. When assessing the energy, don’t overthink it, just go with whatever comes first.
The last thing to mention in this space is that most objects go through a cleansing cycle before ever getting used. Personally, I wash everything from the thrift store before ever wearing or using it. Running clothing through the laundry is enough to shake any little bits of residual energy away. Disinfecting or wiping down decor also serves this purpose. If you’ve bought a painting, you can wave it around outside a few times for a cleanse from the fresh air.
Do you thrift or pick up secondhand items? What’s your experience with energy from used items?
