“Are you afraid that you might be talking to a demon?”
Well, no.
Even if it is a demon, so what? There’s nothing it can do to hurt me. If anything, I’d be curious to explore why it is I perceive that energy to be scary. Is this conditioning I’ve been subjected to? Was there an event that lead me to believe I should fear it? Where does this fear come from?
There’s nothing to fear in life. Not even death. (As I scurry away from that very high cliff edge and the black depths of the endless ocean)
Life is messy. It’s perfectly normal and natural to have fears. I personally believe that it’s worth trying to work through them for a more peaceful existence. There’s too many fun things to experience to be paralyzed from trying because of fear and anxiety.
So, I’ve started crowd sourcing ideas for overcoming fear and how to you start to squash yours. Here’s what we’ve got:
- Repeated exposure. Very simply, you start by exposing yourself to the situation very slowly. Are you afraid of heights? Start by going up a story or two in a building with floor to ceiling glass windows and standing close to the edge. As you start to feel your body tense up, practice breathwork. Start by doing this for 20-30 seconds. As you become more relaxed, increase the amount of time you spend there. As you work up to several minutes, perhaps you go up another floor in the building. Keep increasing the length of time and height you’re at. Then switch it up and maybe go somewhere with a fence instead of a window. Overtime, you’ll start to train your body to be more and more relaxed as the stakes grow ever higher.
- Understand the root cause. Why are you afraid of this thing? Did something happen when you were small that made you feel out of control? Sometimes just knowing where it came from and changing your perspective on the situation is enough to rid yourself of that fear. Sometimes it’s deeper than that. If you’re not sure where the fear came from, you can try past life regression hypnosis or guided meditations to help you identify where that fear began.
- Energy Work. This can be a whole bunch of different things, including the meditation or past life regression I mentioned in understanding the root cause. Going beyond just the understanding here, you can start to move that energy out of your space and release it so it’s no longer yours. Distance reiki can be helpful in this movement. Exercise also works wonders this way. Somatic therapy is also fantastic.
- Face them. (I say this to mean within reason. If you fear getting bitten by a black widow spider, don’t go face that fear just to find out what will happen. We already know and it’s not good.) But, sometimes facing them is the best thing you can do. What’s the worst that could happen? (again, please don’t go get hurt or do anything destructive to yourself or others!) What sort of information will that demon say that will cause you harm? What if they say it? You know it’s not true and you don’t have to listen to them, so why not try?
Have you worked through fears? What’s the hardest fear you’ve faced? What fear do you want to work on next? Let me know in the comments!
